LOCAL SURFER FOUND DEAD ON FORT BRAGG BEACH

Updated: 10/11/2010 02:03:32 PM PDTThe death of a 64-year-old Mendocino man seen surfing at Hare Creek Beach in Fort Bragg Saturday afternoon is under investigation, the Mendocino County Sheriff/Coroner's Office announced Monday.
Sheriff's deputies responding to a reported surfing accident at the beach at about 2 p.m. learned witnesses reported seeing the man surfing for at least 45 minutes. At some point the victim's surf board was seen without him on it, and the witnesses searched for him. The victim was unresponsive when witnesses found him. They pulled him to the beach, began CPR and called 9-1-1.
The Fort Bragg Fire Department and Mendocino Coast Ambulance responded. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of his next of kin. Investigation into the cause of the death continues.
